On 28 February 2026, Hayakawa Japanese Language School & Cultural Center proudly hosted a special Chanoyu (Japanese Tea Ceremony) experience at The Farm Restaurant, Chennai, bringing together over 50 tea enthusiasts for an immersive cultural gathering held between 1:00 PM and 3:30 PM.
The event was organized under the Chennai Omotesenke Sado-Kai, sponsored by Dahlia – Authentic Japanese Restaurant and Hayakawa Japanese Language School & Cultural Center, with the aim of sharing the beauty and philosophy of traditional Japanese tea culture with the Chennai community.
Guided by Tea Master Yuko Shimizu, participants were introduced to the refined art of Chanoyu — a practice that embodies the principles of harmony (wa), respect (kei), purity (sei), and tranquility (jaku). Each gesture, utensil and movement in the ceremony reflected centuries of Japanese tradition and hospitality.
During the session, guests experienced multiple elements of an authentic tea gathering:
• Usucha (Thin Matcha Tea) — a lighter, frothy preparation enjoyed in tea gatherings
• Traditional Japanese Wagashi (Sweets) carefully curated to complement the taste of Matcha
• A beautifully prepared Japanese Obento meal, enhancing the overall cultural experience
The serene garden environment of The Farm Restaurant provided a perfect setting for guests to slow down and appreciate the philosophy of “Ichigo Ichie” (一期一会) — the belief that every meeting is unique and should be cherished.
Hayakawa extends special thanks to Shalini San and Arul San from The Farm Restaurant for their wonderful support and for organizing such a memorable setting for this cultural event.
Health Benefits of Matcha
Beyond its cultural significance, Matcha is also known for its remarkable health benefits.
Matcha is rich in antioxidants, particularly catechins, which help protect the body from oxidative stress and support overall wellness.
It provides sustained energy and focus due to the presence of L-theanine, promoting calm alertness and improved concentration without the sharp spikes associated with coffee.
Matcha also supports metabolism and natural detoxification, thanks to its high chlorophyll content.
Additionally, the combination of caffeine and L-theanine helps enhance mental clarity while reducing stress, making Matcha ideal for mindful experiences such as the tea ceremony.
A Cultural Experience Beyond Tea
For many participants, the Chanoyu experience offered much more than simply drinking tea. It created a moment to pause, observe details, appreciate beauty, and connect with others in a meaningful way. The ceremony also provided insight into the Japanese concept of Omotenashi — wholehearted hospitality that anticipates the needs of guests.
