Hayakawa hosted a special weekend of Japanese culture on 13 and 14 December 2025, featuring an authentic Japanese tea ceremony (Chanoyu), a focused practice session for tea students and a graduation ceremony for two dedicated practitioners – Revathi San and Yamagami San.

Over the two days, participants experienced the elegance and mindfulness of Chanoyu through an intimate public tea ceremony, where freshly whisked matcha was served with traditional Japanese sweets in a calm and refined setting. Guided by trained tea practitioners, guests were introduced to the spirit of harmony, respect, purity and tranquillity that lies at the heart of the Japanese tea ceremony.

Public Tea Ceremony – A Calm Cultural Experience in Chennai

The tea ceremony was conducted in small groups to preserve the serene atmosphere and allow each guest to fully appreciate the details of the experience – from the sound of hot water being poured, to the graceful movements of the host, to the proper way of receiving and drinking the bowl of matcha.

Participants also learned simple Japanese expressions used in the tearoom and were given a brief explanation of the utensils, sweets and seasonal elements used in the ceremony. Many guests shared that it was a rare opportunity to step away from their busy routines and immerse themselves in an authentic Japanese cultural tradition right here in Chennai.

Chanoyu Practice Session for Hayakawa Students

Ahead of the public sessions, Hayakawa’s Chanoyu students participated in a dedicated practice session. Under close guidance, they refined key aspects of the tea ceremony, including:

  • Host and guest etiquette

  • Handling and placement of utensils

  • Flow of movements and timing

  • Creating an atmosphere of hospitality for guests

This practice not only strengthened their technical skills, but also deepened their understanding of the tea ceremony as a way of cultivating mindfulness, humility and consideration for others.

Graduation Ceremony:

The weekend concluded with a heartfelt graduation ceremony for two committed tea practitioners – Revathi San and Yamagami San – who have been steadily studying Chanoyu with Hayakawa.

During the ceremony, they performed tea in front of invited guests, demonstrating the knowledge and discipline they have acquired through continuous practice. Upon completion, they were presented with graduation certificates in recognition of their efforts, consistency and sincere dedication to Japanese culture.

Teachers and participants shared words of appreciation, highlighting how their journey in Chanoyu has inspired other students and contributed to strengthening the cultural bridge between India and Japan.

Continuing to Build Cultural Bridges

Through programs such as the Japanese tea ceremony, Hayakawa aims not only to teach language, but also to offer authentic cultural experiences that help students and the wider community connect more deeply with Japan.

We thank all participants, students and staff who supported the tea ceremony, practice session and graduation.

Details of upcoming tea ceremony events and cultural programs will be announced on the Hayakawa website and social media channels. Interested learners and culture enthusiasts are encouraged to follow our updates and join us in future sessions to experience the spirit of Chanoyu in Chennai.
