What is Senryu?
Senryu (川柳) is a Japanese form of short poetry, similar to Haiku. While Haiku usually focuses on nature and includes seasonal words called Kigo, Senryu focuses on human life, emotions, behaviour, humour, and irony.
A Senryu follows a simple 5-7-5 syllable pattern and does not need to rhyme.
Example of Senryu:
どろぼうを
とらえてみれば
わがこなり
Doroboo o
Toraete mireba
Wagako nari
Translation:
The robber,
When I catch and see,
It is my own son.
