We at Hayakawa are happy to inform you that we are conducting a Noh Workshop for the first time at Hayakawa!
About Noh (能, のう):
Noh is a traditional Japanese performing art that has been passed down from generation to generation without interruption for more than 650 years since the Muromachi period.
Noh is a musical and dance drama performed to the accompaniment of Utai (songs and lines) and Hayashi (musical instrument), and is characterized by performers wearing masks called Noh masks in many pieces. The characters are not only human, but also non-earthly beings such as gods, ogres, monsters and ghosts. The story often involves an encounter with a spirit from the past, like a ghost, who has experienced a great tragedy or loss. During the story, the spirit’s resentment is slowly quelled and they find some peace. The performers express their emotions with simple, stylized movements. The motif of quelling a spirit and the traditional masks (like the one above – ‘Okina’ – depicting an old man) from Noh are frequently seen in modern Japanese manga, anime and films.
During the workshop, we will introduce Noh, and demonstrate Utai as well as the walking movement – one of the basic parts of dance – for the participants before they can also practise. We really hope that this workshop will turn out great and help understand the spirit of traditional Japanese performing arts.
Entry is free for Hayakawa Students. Registration is required on or before 2nd June 2023 by 5PM.
Note:
1. Video/Photography/Mobile phones strictly not allowed inside the event hall.
2. The participants should bring their own socks for practising the walking movement indoors.
